Staring at Screens All Day is Bad for Your Eye Health: Importance of Blue Light Glasses

March 23, 2023 - With the increasing use of technology in our daily lives, it’s becoming more and more common for people to spend extended periods of time staring at screens. Whether it’s for work or leisure, this can have a significant impact on our eye health, causing digital eye strain, headaches, and even more serious conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

According to a recent study by the American Optometric Association, over 90% of people who use a computer for more than three hours per day suffer from digital eye strain. This is caused by the blue light emitted by screens, which can disrupt our natural sleep patterns and cause eye fatigue and discomfort.

“Digital eye strain is a real problem that affects people of all ages,” said Bye Blue Light President Daniel Define. “As someone who has suffered from it myself, I know how important it is to take steps to protect our eyes when using screens.”

One way to protect our eyes is by wearing blue light glasses. These glasses are specially designed to block out blue light and reduce the strain on our eyes. They are becoming increasingly popular among people who work in front of computers all day, as well as those who use smartphones and other devices.

“Blue light glasses are a great way to protect our eyes from the harmful effects of screens,” said Define. “They can help reduce eye strain, headaches, and other symptoms of digital eye strain. They’re also an important tool in preventing AMD, a serious condition that can lead to blindness.”

AMD is a condition that affects the central part of the retina, called the macula, and is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50. While there are treatments available for AMD, there is currently no cure.

“Protecting our eyes from blue light is especially important for those at risk for AMD,” said Define. “This includes people over the age of 50, as well as those with a family history of the condition. But it’s important to remember that everyone can benefit from wearing blue light glasses, regardless of age or risk factors.”

In conclusion, staring at screens all day can have a significant impact on our eye health, causing digital eye strain and increasing our risk for more serious conditions like AMD. To protect our eyes, it’s important to take breaks from screens, practice good ergonomics, and wear blue light glasses. These simple steps can go a long way in protecting our vision and ensuring our eyes stay healthy for years to come.
